One of the most frequently asked questions from friends off island is what do you do in the winter. I respond that most of us year-round residents enjoy the solitude and beauty of quiet winter days. We love going to one of the many restaurants that remain open without worrying about crowds (www.mvchowdercompany.com) and finding a parking space with ease and getting our shopping done without waiting in long lines. The Martha’s Vineyard Film Society has been a welcomed winter activity bringing not only Oscar-nominated films to the Island but streaming in opera on Sundays from January to April.
When I am not in the office or taking an off-Island excursion I love to have family and friends over for cozy dinners of eggplant parmesan, lemon
pasta, stuffed pork chops or a yummy meatloaf. As my daughter, son-in-law and two grandson’s live on Island it is great to be available for after school pick up’s and activities and a dinner in front of the fire.
There are also many options for staying in shape if you can’t get outdoors. I like the pool-ates on Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the pool at the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven. That all being said I will be happy to see Spring arrive soon.

My favorite thing to do on Martha’s Vineyard is to enjoy and take advantage of the simple luxuries of Island living in the offseason. The Island is serene, beautiful and lures me outside to enjoy the natural wonderland at my doorstep. On a cold sunny day, I love to go hiking on the many Land Bank trails that meander around the countryside Up Island with striking views over the Sound. In the evenings, I like to have good friends over to enjoy drinks by the roaring fireplace

Every Sunday morning I look forward to picking a new island trail to hike and explore. Typical morning involves meeting a couple of friends at the Black Dog Restaurant on Vineyard Haven Harbor. Sitting by the window looking out over the Vineyard Haven Harbor sipping a coffee and eating a plate of loaded blueberry pancakes. Winter time on the Vineyard is magical! The air is fresh and crisp..The salty smells of the ocean and the bright full moons are memorable all year long!

My favorite activity in the winter is to hike the various island Land Bank Trails. My favorite thing to do is public skating at the MV Ice Arena. It's a healthy and fun family activity!
