Edgartown, a "Down-Island town", is located about 6 miles Southeast of Oak Bluffs and 9 miles Southeast of Vineyard Haven (the other "Down-Island towns").
The streets of Edgartown Village are lined with historical buildings and residences. An outstanding example is the Old Whaling Church built in 1843 by the expansive Methodist community; it now serves as a performing arts center and an important meeting hall for the town and private organizations. Village properties are highly sought after because of the area's rich history.
For the vacationers, Edgartown's famous Katama / South Beach is a 3-mile Atlantic Ocean barrier beach on the Island's South Shore.
