Edgartown, a "Down-Island town", is located about 6 miles Southeast of Oak Bluffs and 9 miles Southeast of Vineyard Haven (the other "Down-Island towns").
The streets of Edgartown Village are lined with historical buildings and residences. An outstanding example is the Old Whaling Church built in 1843 by the expansive Methodist community; it now serves as a performing arts center and an important meeting hall for the town and private organizations. Village properties are highly sought after because of the area's rich history.
For the vacationers, Edgartown's famous Katama / South Beach is a 3-mile Atlantic Ocean barrier beach on the Island's South Shore. This public beach with dunes and sparkling white sand has free parking and is certainly one of the town's many Jewels. The Edgartown Harbor is a scenic and busy port that attracts all kinds of boaters. It is best known for its working skiffs operated by local fisherman who seem to enjoy docking alongside multi-million dollar yachts.
Come take a downtown stroll past the many vibrant rose gardens that weave through the white picket fences marking the bounds of the old Captain’s residences; or leisurely shop in the colorful boutiques on Main Street. Whatever you fancy you will find it in Edgartown!
