5 Best Beaches on Martha's Vineyard

Sunset on Martha's Vineyard beach

The beaches of Martha’s Vineyard are some of the most beautiful in the country. These beaches attract everyone from celebrities to weekend warriors. Here are our picks for the 5 Best Beaches on Martha’s Vineyard:

East Beach

Sandals on Beach in Martha's VineyardLocated on the island of Chappaquiddick, this remote beach receives less traffic than many of the other beaches on the island but it is definitely worth the trip. East Beach offers gorgeous views of the Atlantic, big waves and plenty of privacy. It is also great for bird watching. This beach is accessible by car, bike or the Chappy Ferry out of Edgartown (see ferry info here). Beach admission is $5 for adults and free for ages 15 and under.

Katama Beach (South Beach)

South Beach is one of the most popular beaches on Martha’s Vineyard – and for good reason! This three-mile long barrier beach is about 4 miles south of downtown Edgartown at the end of Katama Road. The waves here are typically pretty large, making South Beach great for surfing. You easily can drive to South Beach and there is plenty of parking, or you can take the Vineyard Transit Authority bus from Oak Bluffs and Edgartown.

Joseph Sylvia State Beach

More commonly known as simply “State Beach,” this 2-mile stretch of soft sand runs along Beach Road between Oak Bluffs and Edgartown. State Beach is popular for families, especially with young children, thanks to its calm, warm waters and free parking. There is lifeguard coverage on the Edgartown end of the beach. This beach is famous as the setting for many of the beach scenes in Jaws.

Menemsha Public Beach

Gay Head Cliffs on Martha's VineyardThis north-island beach is located in the historic fishing village of Menemsha, which still receives fresh deliveries of locally caught seafood every day. Menemsha Beach faces the calm waters of Vineyard Sound, which gives beach-goers beautiful views of the Cuttyhunk and the other Elizabeth Islands. This is one of the absolute best places on the island to catch a sunset!

Menemsha Beach has limited parking and public showers and restrooms. It is a short walk to great restaurants, shopping and fish markets.

Moshup Public Beach

Aquinnah’s public beach is arguably the most scenic on the island, thanks to its views of the stunning Gay Head Cliffs, a national landmark. At times, Moshup has very large waves, making this a popular surf-spot on the southern end of the island. Moshup tends to have smaller crowds because it is located “up-island,” which is more rural than the down-island towns of Edgartown, Oak Bluffs and Vineyard Haven.

Spring Time on Martha's Vineyard

Ocean Park Realty

Summer of 2016

Blog written by: Joanna FairchildMartha's Vineyard park

It’s May, and while it has been a cold start to our Island season we are finally beginning to see flowers blooming and leaves popping.  The Lilacs, a sure sign of summer days ahead are in full bloom.  Another sign, according to local fishermen, is the return of the stripe bass. The shops on Circuit Avenue, Main Streets in Edgartown and Vineyard Haven that were dormant all winter are busy getting ready for their openings.   Some of the popular restaurants in Oak Bluffs, like Red Cat, Fat Ronnie’s, Back Door Donuts and Look Out, to name a few, have opened to a brisk business.  Those of us who stayed throughout the winter were not without plenty of options, but it is always fun and exciting to have more choices on where to dine. Everywhere you look folks are working in their yards or spring cleaning.  Last year alone tourists brought over $150,000 million in revenue so it is important to put our best effort forward.

Oak Bluffs is gallantly holding its own these days.  Between the upscale restaurants, million dollar homes, a state of the art library, a new Bowling Alley, Farm Neck Golf Course, major events like Illumination Night and the end of summer fireworks led our rental office to sell out August right after the New Year.  OB has waterfront beaches, four different ferries running all summer, a public transportation hub, exciting harbor activity, the historic and fairy book campground of over 300 cottages, restaurants of every type, the oldest carousel in the country and even a designated Art District. All these appealing amenities showcase Oak Bluffs, the Victorian town by the sea,  making the town one of the most popular spots to rent and buy a home.

The real estate market continues to show a strong surge in sales.  We are urging people who have thought about putting their home on the market to think about it before the summer influx.  Inventory is low, especially for the first time homebuyers who are eagerly hoping to find a home in the $400,000 to $600,000 range.  Ocean Park Realty has seen more first time homebuyers this year due to the advantage of the low lending rates still in effect and of course buying into a sound investment. Oak Bluffs, Marthas Vineyard

Many projects are in the process of completion as we get ready for the upcoming season.  Oak Bluffs famous for its parks, completed the renovation of historic Niantic Park as well as the Sailing Camp’s development of over 15 acre walking trails available to all members of the community from dawn to dusk.  The new Fire and EMS Station safeguarding Oak Bluffs is now operating as one department.  The North Bluff seawall replacement and boardwalk project is scheduled to be completed by the end of June, providing better protection against storms and surges

The town is also working on major beach nourishment projects and bought a beach rake to enhance and maintain the local beaches.  The 10 year construction project of the Lagoon Pond Drawbridge will finally be completed by July 4th and once again both residents and visitors alike will enjoy the new open space, landscaping and waterfront access under and around the bridge.

On Island we consider April, May & June our shoulder season and one of the industries that keep the atmosphere alive and well is the destination weddings.  Out of the 300-400 weddings a year that we host on Marth’s Vineyard, most of them are planned in the spring and fall months, taking advantage of the lower hotel rates, accessible cottage rentals and easier access to ferry reservations.  Call our rental department at 508-693-3037 for favorable rates and availability.
